Introducing the Aralia elata, also known as Japanese Angelica Tree or Japanese Aralia. This small deciduous tree or shrub grows up to six meters in height and is native to eastern Russia, China, Korea, and Japan. Its prickly gray bark and large, double pinnate leaves make for a unique appearance. In late summer, the plant produces small, white flowers in large umbels followed by small black drupe fruits. The young shoots are edible and can be cooked or blanched for use in salads. Aralia elata prefers partial shade and deep loamy soils, but can also grow in full sun and poorer soils. It is sometimes cultivated for its exotic appearance, often in variegated forms. Discover more about this fascinating plant at plants.usda.gov.
