Growing Info

Scarification: None required, soaking the seed for 24h is optional.

Stratification: none required

Germination: Use a very well draining medium containing coarse sand, perlite, peat, coco fiber or a similar medium. Surface sow the seed and cover lightly with a thin layer (1-2mm or the thickness of the seed) of sand. Gently mist the medium to settle the seed without displacing them. Do not cover pots/sowing trays with plastic or glass. Ideal temps are 75-90F during the day and 60-70F during the night. Germination should take place within a couple of weeks.

Other: Once seedlings have a few true leaves and are large enough to handle (usually a few months in), pot them individually into small pots with a well-draining succulent mix. Keep in a bright light environment and once established in the new pots, they should be able to take full sun.

Agave oteroi is a striking and robust medium-sized agave known for its distinctive and solitary rosette formation. The plant features a broad, open crown with a few wide leaves, reaching up to 75 cm in diameter, making it a standout addition to any garden or landscape. This agave showcases two distinct forms; the typical form defined by Gentry boasts ghostly white leaves, whereas the variant described by Felipe Otero exhibits a more compact, rounder form with vibrant green leaves. Often sold under names like Agave sp. Sierra Mixteca FO-076 or Agave horrida var. oteroi, this form occasionally produces stunning blue plants, isolated from their green counterparts. Agave oteroi is truly a unique treasure, differing significantly from the typical Agave titanota, and is highly coveted by enthusiasts for its beauty and rarity. Its deep grey-green rosettes, coupled with thick, parchment-colored leaves adorned with large, fearsome spines, make it a spectacular horticultural specimen.
