Introducing Acer palmatum ssp. amoenum 'Shojo', also known as the Shojo Japanese Maple. This stunning plant boasts deep-colored foliage that almost appears black-red in color. In the fall, the foliage transforms into beautiful crimson tones that dominate the landscape. The parent plant, according to Vertrees, is a deep-colored palmatum that exhibits a similar coloration to 'Shojo'. When young, the Shojo Japanese Maple grows upright and vigorous with lateral branching. At maturity, it becomes a wide, tall tree at least 3 meters in height. The name 'Shojo' comes from the red-faced orangutan that is a common character in many Japanese dramas. Whether in partial shade or full sun, this cultivar holds its color well into late summer. While true-to-type cannot be guaranteed when grown from seed, the Shojo Japanese Maple is a must-have for any garden seeking a stunning accent piece.
