Acacia baileyana var. purpurea, also known as Blue-leaved Cootamundra Wattle or Purple Fernleaf Acacia, is a stunning addition to any garden. This fast-growing evergreen tree reaches up to 20 feet in height, and its wide-spreading canopy can extend up to 40 feet, offering both shade and visual appeal. The tree's weeping branches are adorned with silvery blue-gray, feathery leaves that emerge with a unique purple hue, creating a striking contrast. Come late winter to early spring, Purple Fernleaf Acacia adds a burst of color with its sweetly fragrant, bright golden-yellow flowers clustered in small globes.
Perfect for full sun to lightly filtered shade environments, this tree is not only frost tolerant—withstanding temperatures as low as 15-20°F—but also moderately drought resistant once established. Though relatively short-lived, with a lifespan of around 30 years, it makes a dramatic statement as either a trained-up street or patio tree or as a large shrub. Ideal for slopes, this plant's adaptability and stunning appearance have earned it the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. However, due to its invasiveness in certain regions, caution is advised in planting near sensitive habitats.
