This deciduous tree is native to the Midwestern and Upper South regions of North America and is typically found growing in uplands with good drainage, less often along lowland streams. It can grow up to 60 ft tall with a trunk up to 3 ft in diameter and has distinguishing laurel-like leaves that are bright green on top and paler and downy on the underside.
