Plantago lanceolata, also known as Narrowleaf Plantain or Ribwort Plantain, is a common weed found in cultivated land across Europe, North Africa and Southwest Asia. This rosette-forming perennial herb has lanceolate basal leaves and a furrowed flower stalk with an ovoid inflorescence. It is also used frequently in herbal teas and other remedies for respiratory infections and skin disorders. The leaves contain mucilage, tannin and silic acid, making it an effective treatment for bleeding and wounds. Additionally, the seeds can be used to obtain good quality fibre suitable for textiles, and an extract from the seed coats functions as a fabric stiffener. P. lanceolata contains phenylethanoids, iridoid glycosides and antibacterial properties, making it a valuable addition to any herbal medicine cabinet.
