Cotoneaster franchetii, commonly known as Franchet's Cotoneaster or Orange Cotoneaster, is a versatile and robust deciduous to semi-evergreen shrub that adds both beauty and resilience to any landscape. Native to the mountainous regions of southern China, Myanmar, and northern Thailand, this plant flourishes in USDA zones 6 to 9, reaching heights of 6 to 10 feet with a spread of up to 8 feet. Its arching branches are adorned with glossy, gray-green leaves that reveal a white felty underside, adding texture and interest to gardens year-round. In July, it presents a dainty display of pink and white flowers, which are followed by an abundance of vibrant red-orange berries that persist into winter, providing visual appeal even in the colder months. These berries can be used to create a rose-tan dye.

Ideal for use as a hedge or for naturalizing spaces, Cotoneaster franchetii thrives in well-drained loams under full sun to part shade and is tolerant of drought and clay soils. With proper care and cultivation, including moderate watering and minimal pruning, Cotoneaster franchetii can become a striking focal point in any garden setting, offering year-round interest and a burst of color during autumn and winter.
