Looking for a tough, easy-to-grow shrub with showy flowers and fruit? Look no further than Viburnum sargentii Sargent Cranberry. Native to northeastern Asia, this deciduous shrub boasts white flowers with purple anthers, clustered in flat-topped cymes up to 4" across, and scarlet fruit that lasts into winter. The new leaves start out bronzy, turn green in summer, and become yellowish or reddish in the fall. With a multistemmed, upright rounded habit, this shrub grows to 12-15' tall and wide, making it perfect for use as a border, screen, mass planting, or in small groupings. While it prefers full sun to partial shade, it's soil adaptable and can grow on a variety of fertile, moist soils. Viburnum sargentii Sargent Cranberry is also known for its relatively large, red, fleshy fruits, which are surrounded by a ring of sterile flowers. However, landscaping this shrub also comes with its liabilities. Aphids can be particularly problematic to it, borer occasionally attacks it, and it needs occasional rejuvenation pruning. Otherwise, this shrub is very tough and easy to grow, making it a great choice for difficult growing sites. Propagation can be done either by cuttings or by seed.
