Tsuga canadensis, commonly known as Canadian Hemlock or Eastern Hemlock, is a grand and graceful conifer with shiny dark green foliage. This majestic tree grows well in shade and is known for its long life, with some specimens recorded to be at least 554 years old. Generally reaching a height of around 31 meters (100 feet), some exceptional trees have been recorded to reach up to 53 meters (173 feet), with trunk diameters of up to 1.75 meters (6 feet). The crown is conical, and the bark is scaly and deeply fissured, with the twigs being yellow-brown in color and densely pubescent. Tsuga canadensis prefers moist, acidic soil and is best planted in a location sheltered from strong winds and the sun. The tree can adapt well to pruning and makes a magnificent hedge. Native from coastal Canada to Minnesota and south to Georgia and Alabama, Tsuga canadensis is found primarily on rocky ridges, hillsides, and ravines with high levels of moisture. Adaptable to shade, the tree dislikes high temperatures and drought. Overall, Tsuga canadensis is an impressive and resilient tree species that can make a beautiful addition to any landscape.
