Discover the beauty of Trillium ovatum, also known as the Western Wake Robin, Pacific Trillium or Western White Trillium. This member of the Trilliaceae family thrives in rich forest areas of the western United States and western Canada. It's known for its white or pink flowers that can turn darker as they mature. In some cases, petals may even be maroon. The plant spreads by way of underground rhizomes and each flowering stalk can reach up to 50 cm tall. Occurring in temperate climates, it prefers soil that is pH neutral-acidic and moist, with partial shade. Associated understory plants include swordfern, vanilla leaf, violets, redwood sorrel and salal. Enjoy T. ovatum's unique sepals, narrowly oblong and alternating with the white petals of the flower. Watch as ants are attracted to carry the seed back to their nest for feeding. During early spring, robins start to appear, giving the plant the alternative name of "wake-robin."
