Tilia tomentosa, also known as Silver Lime or Silver Linden, is a stunning deciduous tree that is native to southeastern Europe and southwestern Asia. It can grow up to 35 meters tall, and has a trunk diameter of up to 2 meters. The leaves are alternately arranged, round or triangular-ovate, and have an appealing silvery under surface that can be seen in the breeze. It boasts yellow-white flowers in late June that have a strong, sweet scent and attract honeybees. This tree is widely grown in Europe as an ornamental tree, and is tolerant of urban pollution, soil compaction, heat, and drought. It is a good street tree and lawn tree that is drought tolerant. However, this tree can cause issues to bees because nectar contains sugars that cannot be digested by bumble bees, rendering it a somewhat toxic tree to them. An infusion made from the flowers of T. tomentosa is antispasmodic, diaphoretic and sedative. This may be attributable to the presence of pharmacologically active ligands of benzodiazepine receptor. It is a must-have tree for those who love nature and want to add a touch of beauty to their gardens.
