Welcome to the world of Thespesia populnea, commonly known as the Portia Tree! This beautiful flowering plant belongs to the mallow family and has a pantropical distribution, growing in coastal areas around the world. The Portia Tree is a small tree or shrub that reaches a height of 6-10m and has a trunk diameter of 20-30cm. It can grow in a wide range of soil types, from sand to limestone and basalt, and prefers neutral soils with a pH of 6-7.4. This adaptable tree grows in areas that receive 500-1600mm of rainfall, with elevations varying from sea level to 275m. While it is possibly indigenous to the Hawaiian Islands and other areas in the Pacific, it is thought to be native only to the Old World, most likely originating in India. Early Polynesians may have spread the Portia Tree for its useful wood and bast fibers. Discover more about this fascinating plant species on the USDA website.
