Telekia speciosa, known as Giant Oxeye, Yellow Oxeye or Heartleaf Oxeye, is a striking herbaceous perennial belonging to the Asteraceae family. This species, native to mountainous regions of southern Europe and western Asia, can transform any garden landscape with its bold presence, marked by towering heights ranging from 4 to 6 feet. Its charming, sunflower-like blossoms feature brilliantly yellow ray petals and gold disc centers, blooming profusely from August to September. These blooms, perched on branching stems, draw an array of pollinators, including butterflies and birds, making it a dynamic addition to wildlife-friendly gardens.

Ideal for zones 3 to 7, Telekia speciosa thrives in medium, well-drained soils and tolerates both full sun and partial shade, provided moisture levels are maintained. This low-maintenance, rhizomatous perennial prefers shelter from strong winds and benefits from strategic pruning post-bloom. Not only are its fragrant, coarse leaves a noticeable feature, but the plant itself also serves as a deer-resistant, robust specimen suitable for naturalizing in borders, woodland edges, or moist spots by streams and ponds. Its adaptability across different soil types and resilience against most pests—except occasional snails and slugs—makes it a versatile and captivating choice for gardens aiming to mimic natural landscapes while providing visual intrigue with its textured foliage and vibrant flowers.
