Tectona grandis, also known as "teak", is a tropical hardwood tree species that produces some of the most durable and water-resistant wood products in the world. It is commonly used for boat building, exterior construction, furniture, veneer, carving, turnings, and other small wood projects. Most commercially harvested teak is grown on plantations found in Indonesia, but it is also native to south and southeast Asia, mainly India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Thailand. Teak's natural oils make it ideal for exposed locations, as it is termite and pest-resistant. Despite environmental concerns, sustainable teak plantation production is growing. Teak has been used for boatbuilding for over 2000 years due to its strength, resistance to rot, fungi, and mildew, and low shrinkage ratio. It is also easy to work with and finishes well, making it ideal for trim work on boat interiors. Choose teak for its durability and water resistance in demanding outdoor and indoor projects.
