Taxodium mucronatum, also known as Montezuma Baldcypress, Montezuma Cypress or Ahuehuete, is a beautiful and unique tree native to Mexico. It grows from 980 to 8,200 ft in altitude, primarily in highlands at 5,200 to 7,500 ft. This evergreen or semi-evergreen tree can reach up to 130 ft tall with a trunk diameter of 3-10 ft and is known for its spiral arrangement of leaves that lie in two horizontal ranks. The cones are ovoid and measure 1.5-2.5 cm long and 1-2 cm broad.
While this tree typically grows along upland riversides, it can also be found near springs and marshes. Unlike other cypress trees, such as Bald Cypress and Pond Cypress, the Montezuma Cypress rarely produces cypress knees from the roots. It is a highly drought-tolerant and fast-growing tree that thrives in areas with high summer rainfall or climates that are rainy throughout the year.
