Stewartia pseudocamellia, also known as Japanese Stewartia or Deciduous Camellia, is an attractive ornamental tree native to Japan and Korea. With a height of 30-40 ft, it features beautiful white flowers with orange centers in July, exfoliating bark in patches of orangey brown, gray, and brown, and fall colors of yellow, red, and dark reddish purple. It has a pyramidal or oval habit and is probably the best garden Stewartia, as noted by Dirr. Growing best in rich organic soils, this tree requires consistent moisture and some light shade in the afternoon to avoid the hot sun. It can be used as a specimen in shrub borders or as a specimen lawn planting with year-round interest. When grown with single trunks, it forms taller pyramidal-shaped trees, and when having multiple trunks, plants tend to grow shorter and spread out wider. This beautiful tree was introduced to the Western cultivation in 1874, and it can tolerate winters as cold as -22°F.
