Sequoia sempervirens, commonly known as the Coastal Redwood, is an awe-inspiring evergreen tree found in the coastal fog belt below 600 meters in southwestern North America, from Oregon to California. It is the sole living species of the genus Sequoia in the cypress family Cupressaceae. This giant tree can grow up to 110 m (361ft) by 20 m (65ft) at a fast rate, about 2 feet per year in favorable conditions. Sequoia sempervirens can live for 1,200–1,800 years or more, and some specimens are even recorded to be 2200 years old. This conical crown tree has horizontal to slightly drooping branches with thick, soft, fibrous, and reddish-brown bark. The root system is composed of shallow, wide-spreading lateral roots. Sequoia sempervirens has multiple uses, including making paper from its fibrous bark, which can be harvested without harm to the tree, and its branches can be harvested throughout the year. The plant's sap is used to treat rundown conditions and as a stimulant and tonic. The plant is a popular attraction in cool humid areas and woodland gardens. While fully hardy in Britain, it may lose its leaves in cold winters. Propagation can be done through cutting or sowing seeds. Additionally, Sequoia sempervirens is the state tree of California.
