Scutellaria baicalensis, also known as Baikal skullcap or Chinese skullcap, is a flowering plant in the Lamiaceae family. Native to China, Korea, Mongolia, and Russia, this plant has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. Its dried root, known as huángqín, is one of the 50 fundamental herbs in traditional Chinese medicine and has been used for its anti-inflammatory and fever-reducing properties. Scutellaria baicalensis contains several chemical compounds, including baicalein, baicalin, wogonin, norwogonin, oroxylin A, and β-sitosterol. It is important to use the Latin name when referring to this plant, as the term 'skullcap' is used for over 200 varieties of plants. Piper methysticum (kava) and Valeriana officinalis (valerian) are other plants that have similar properties. Scutellaria baicalensis should not be confused with Scutellaria lateriflora (North American skullcap), which can be processed and contaminated with other plants at high enough levels to be of concern. Make sure to use the correct Latin name when seeking out this beneficial plant.
