The Rosa virginiana, also known as the Virginia Rose, Common Wild Rose or Prairie Rose, is a woody perennial in the rose family that is native to eastern North America. This deciduous shrub forms suckering shrubs up to 5 ft in height, covered in numerous hooked prickles. Its glossy leaves are pinnate with 7-9 leaflets, and it produces 2 1/2" pink flowers bearing single or small clusters from midsummer to fall. The plant grows very quickly, producing bright red hips that last in winter and turning yellow, orange, scarlet, crimson, and brown in the fall. Rosa virginiana is incredibly versatile and can even grow on sandy soils by the ocean, making it a popular addition to gardens. In fact, it has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. Furthermore, indigenous people use its roots as a medicinal herb for treating sore eyes or to wash cuts on the feet. This highly disease-resistant shrub is perfect for creating hedges, soil stabilization and as ground cover as it forms thickets with its suckers.
