Black locust is known for its nitrogen-fixing capabilities, making it able to grow on poor soils and an early colonizer of disturbed areas. The fragrant white flowers of the black locust are beloved by bees, making it a major honey plant in eastern US. The black locust is highly valued for its firewood, burning slowly with little visible flame or smoke and having a higher heat content than any other species that grows widely in the Eastern United States. Overall, the black locust is a fast-growing, resilient tree with many attributes, making it a favorite for both bees and humans alike.
