Looking for an eye-catching, low-maintenance hedge? Look no further than Ribes alpinum, also known as Alpine Currant or Mountain Currant. This small deciduous shrub is native to central and northern Europe, and grows up to 6.5 feet tall and 4.9 feet wide. The plant is dense and upright when young, and rounded when mature. Bright green foliage leafs out early, and greenish-yellow flowers are followed by 1/4" red berries in June and July. The plant produces the best fruit when male and female specimens are grown together. Ribes alpinum is easy to grow and prefers well-drained soil that is not too rich in nutrients. The plant is hardy down to USDA zone 2, making it suitable for a variety of environments. It is also ideal for low hedges, requiring little pruning to maintain its shape. This beautiful and low-maintenance plant is a great addition to any garden.
