Rhododendron calendulaceum, also known as Flame Azalea, is a stunning deciduous shrub that grows between 120 and 450 cm tall. It boasts 3-7 cm long leaves that are a dull green color above and villous below, and 4-5 cm long flowers that are usually a striking orange shade, ranging from pastel to dark reddish-orange. This species is native to the Appalachian Mountains in the eastern United States, spreading from southern New York to northern Georgia. Flame Azalea is highly sought after due to its striking colors and relative cold hardiness, making it one of the finest ornamental shrubs in the country. It is also intermediate in shade tolerance, growing well in the indirect light of open woods. Flame Azalea serves as an important understory shrub in forests that experience periodic fires and is probably fire-resistant due to its ability to sprout from the root crown. Its ability to sprout makes it a useful species to regenerate during forest rejuvenation. Flame Azalea is secure throughout most of its range, but is listed as endangered in Ohio. Get your hands on this stunning shrub to add a touch of fiery warmth to your garden!
