Quercus hemisphaerica, also known as Laurel Oak, Darlington Oak and Laurel-leaf Oak, is a species of oak native to the Southeastern United States. It is a medium-sized evergreen to semi-evergreen tree that can grow up to 115 feet tall. Its leaves are entire and mostly elliptical or narrowly ovate, and the acorns take 18 months to mature and are hemispheric in shape. Sand Laurel Oak grows on dry sandy soils while Swamp Laurel Oak grows on flood plains, river bottoms, and occasionally poorly drained upland soils. It is a fast-growing tree often used for firewood and as an urban shade tree. Its natural habitat is oak-dominated forests on elevated margins of wetland ecosystems. With its striking foliage, Laurel Oak is a perfect addition to any landscape where quick growth and shade are desired.
