Looking for a fruit that's perfect for making jellies and jams? Consider Prunus umbellata, also known as Flatwoods Plum, Hog Plum, Sloe, and Wild Plum. This species is a small tree or shrub with a short trunk and broad, compact, flattened crown of slender branches. Its flower clusters, known as umbels, are rounded with equal stalks, resembling an umbrella. The fruit can take up to 18 months to germinate but can be sown in a cold frame as soon as it's ripe. Additionally, the leaves provide a green dye, and the fruit can produce a dark grey to green dye. The wood is heavy, hard, and close-grained. Thriving in well-drained, moisture-retentive loamy soil, this species prefers some lime but can become chlorotic if there is too much lime in the soil. It grows best in a sunny position and tolerates temperatures down to between -5 and -10°C. Consider Prunus umbellata for a flavorful fruit that can provide unique uses beyond just its flavor!
