Introducing the beautiful Prunus speciosa, also known as the Oshima cherry. Native to Izu Oshima island and the Izu Peninsula on Honshu, Japan, this deciduous tree can grow up to 12 metres tall with leaves that have a double-toothed margin and an acuminate apex. The tree bears clusters of showy, white flowers with gold stamens and brown sepals that are hermaphroditic. The fruit is a small black cherry that is edible and used to make tea when dried. The leaves are used in cooking and medicine to make 'cherry tree rice cake'. The Oshima cherry is widely cultivated as an ornamental tree and is planted in many gardens and parks due to its large, showy flowers. Its hybrid parentage has also contributed to many sakura flowering cherry cultivars. Prunus speciosa is a must-have for every garden enthusiast and outdoor lover!
