Discover the rare and endangered Pinus torreyana, a beautiful pine tree found only in the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve and Santa Rosa Island in California. Growing up to 56ft tall, the Torrey Pine has a distinct open-crown with long, needle-like leaves in groups of five. The cones of the Torrey Pine are stout and heavy, ranging from 3.1 to 5.9in long and broad, and contain large edible pine nuts. This ornamental tree is often used in native plant and drought tolerant gardens and landscapes. With only a few hundred trees surviving in the wild, the Torrey Pine is a true rarity and is protected by city tree ordinances in Del Mar.
