Scotch Pine, also known as Pinus sylvestris, is a highly versatile tree that is native to northern Europe and Asia. It was one of the first trees introduced to North America and has become an important tree in forestry due to its wood being used for pulp and sawn timber products. This evergreen coniferous tree has a distinctive long, bare and straight trunk topped by a rounded or flat-topped mass of blue-green leaves. The tree can grow up to 25 meters in height and 1 meter in trunk diameter when mature, and on very productive sites, can exceptionally grow up to 35-45 meters tall and 1.7 meters in trunk diameter. The bark is dark gray-brown on the lower trunk and thin, flaky and orange on the upper trunk and branches. Needle persistence varies from two to four years in warmer climates and up to nine years in subarctic regions. Furthermore, this adaptable tree can grow in various soils ranging from sea level to high altitude mountain-tree conditions. The Scots Pine is an excellent choice for those looking for a strikingly beautiful, versatile and easy to grow tree.
