220 year old trees that are 46 meters tall in the forests of Järvselja). The Scots Pine, also known as Pinus sylvestris, is the only pine native to Northern Europe and is an important tree in forestry. Its wood is used for pulp and sawn timber products. This species is extremely adaptable to various soils and was one of the first trees introduced to North America in the 1600s. The mature tree has a distinctive shape with a long, bare, and straight trunk topped by a rounded or flat-topped mass of foliage. Its blue-green needles persist for two to four years in warmer climates and up to nine years in subarctic regions. The Scots Pine produces red pollination cones that mature into yellow-brown cones and blackish seeds with pale brown wings. With a lifespan averaging 150-300 years, the Scots Pine is an iconic tree that offers many benefits for forestry and landscaping.
