Pinus strobus, also known as Eastern White Pine, is a large, conical tree native to eastern North America. It is one of the best pines for ornamental and general landscape use, and is also an important timber tree. This fast-growing tree prefers full sun and is tolerant of light shade. It has blue-green needles that can grow up to 4 inches long and its branches slightly ascend. Mature trees can live for over 400 years, with some trees in Michigan and Wisconsin reaching almost 500 years in age. The White Pine is a valuable timber used for masts of ships, lumber, house interiors, construction, and cheap furniture. Besides being an ideal specimen or grouping plant, it can also be used for screens. It prefers well-drained soil in cool, humid climates, but can also grow in boggy areas and rocky highlands. The plant provides food and shelter for forest birds and small mammals, such as squirrels. This plant is also medicinally valuable with antiseptic, vulnerary, respiratory and diuretic properties. The turpentine obtained from the resin of White Pine is antiseptic, diuretic, rubefacient, and vermifuge, used internally to treat kidney and bladder complaints, rheumatic affections, respiratory complaints, and skin complaints.
