Pinus greggii, also known as Gregg's Pine, is a small to medium-sized pine tree native to eastern Mexico. It can be found in two distinct regions and has a unique appearance characterized by an open crown and long, slender branches. The needles are bundled in groups of three and are approximately 11 cm in length. The cones are clustered in groups of 5-10 and the branches and upper trunk have smooth bark. Pinus greggii has been introduced in several countries and is closely related to Pinus patula. It grows in cool highland areas at altitudes between 1300-2600m and prefers slightly alkaline or acid soils. This pine tree is not frost-resistant but can tolerate sporadic light frosts. It usually grows mixed with other tree species like Quercus, Platanus, and Liquidambar. Pinus greggii has been cultivated in various subtropical countries, including Brazil, Colombia, New Zealand, and South Africa. Overall, it is a unique and attractive tree that adds beauty to any landscape.
