The Limber Pine, also known as Rocky Mountain White Pine, is a species of pine tree found in subalpine areas of the Rocky Mountains, Great Basin mountains, White Mountains, and parts of California. With bluish-green needles up to 3 inches long, it is a beautiful tree that is tolerant of winter winds and good for Midwestern states. Limber Pine is typically a high-elevation pine, often marking the tree line and can grow up to 25 meters tall. It is an important source of food for species like red squirrels and Clark's nutcrackers, and is also used as an ornamental tree and windbreak. While susceptible to white pine blister rust, there are efforts underway to breed resistant varieties. The Limber Pine is truly a remarkable tree, with at least one specimen in Alberta dating back 3000 years.
