Introducing the Pinus balfouriana Foxtail Pine, a rare high-elevation pine that is exclusive to California, United States. This beautiful tree boasts stiff, dark needles that reach 1 1/2" in length and cones up to 5". It looks like the Pinus aristata but has shorter needles and smaller cones. The Foxtail Pine can grow up to 20 meters tall with a trunk up to 2 meters in diameter. It is a slow-growing tree that can live up to 3000 years in the Sierra Nevada. Its two subspecies, balfouriana and austrina, can be found in the Klamath Mountains and the southern Sierra Nevada, respectively. It is commonly found in subalpine forests at elevations from 1950 to 3500 meters. The Foxtail Pine is often a tree line species, predominantly found around Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. It is closely related to the Great Basin and Rocky Mountain bristlecone pines and has similar fire adaptations, making it a fire survivor. Foxtail Pine seedlings have often been found on burned sites, making it an excellent pioneer species. Don't miss out on the chance to own this rare and stunning addition to your landscape.
