Looking for an eye-catching and versatile evergreen tree to add to your garden? Consider the Picea orientalis, commonly known as the Oriental Spruce or Caucasian Spruce. Native to the Caucasus and adjacent northeast Turkey, this large evergreen can grow up to 45 meters tall and has a trunk diameter of up to 1.5 meters. Its dark green needles are the shortest of any spruce, at only 6-8 mm, and it forms a dense, narrow cone shape. It prefers shelter from dry winter winds but can grow on a wide range of soils. The Oriental Spruce is a popular ornamental tree in gardens across northern Europe and the USA, thanks to its attractive foliage. It's also grown for timber, paper production, and Christmas trees, though its slower growth compared to other spruces reduces its importance. The Picea orientalis was even awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit, and the 'Aureospicata' cultivar has gold-colored foliage in spring. Consider the Oriental Spruce a fantastic and versatile addition to your garden.
