The Picea engelmannii, also known as Engelmann Spruce or Mountain Spruce, is a majestic evergreen tree native to the mountainous regions of western North America. With its blue-green needles that emit a fragrant aroma when crushed, this tree is highly valued for its beautiful appearance and medicinal benefits. The Picea engelmannii is considered superior to the P. abies, the Norway spruce, and can grow up to 120 ft tall. It is mostly found in high-altitude locations, from 3000-12,000 feet, and typically grows up to the alpine tree line. Its bark is thin and scaly, and its leaves are needle-like and blue-green, with a distinctive two-banded appearance. The tree produces slender cylindrical cones that are up to 8 cm long and can be brown or purple in color. The wood of the Picea engelmannii is harvested for paper-making and construction and is also used to make instruments, such as acoustic guitars, violins, and pianos. Additionally, a decoction of the leaves and gum has been used for medicinal purposes, including cancer treatment. Protect and enhance your landscape with the beauty and value of the Engelmann Spruce.
