Looking for an ornamental tree that will add beauty and interest to your landscape? Consider Parkinsonia aculeata, also known as the Jellybean Tree, Mexican Palo Verde, Jerusalem Thorn, and Palo Verde. This species of perennial flowering tree in the pea family, Fabaceae, is native to southwestern United States, Mexico, the Caribbean, South America, and the Galápagos Islands. Parkinsonia aculeata boasts large, fragrant yellow flowers in the spring, green branches, and doubly pinnate leaves with long, narrow leaflets. It grows up to 10 meters tall and has 1-inch thorns, but can be clipped into a hedge. Despite being a beautiful addition to any landscape, Parkinsonia aculeata is considered a major invasive species in Australia and parts of tropical Africa and the Pacific Islands. However, there are several control methods being used to reduce the existing population and spread of this plant. Parkinsonia aculeata thrives in full sun exposure but can grow on a range of dry soils, making it a versatile tree for many landscapes.
