Paeonia sterniana is a captivating perennial, herbaceous peony that graces gardens with its elegance and rarity. Standing at around 45 cm in cultivation, this unique peony showcases exquisite white or occasionally pinkish blossoms, making it a true botanical treasure. Native to the wilds of southeastern Tibet, Paeonia sterniana blooms in May, offering a striking display that is both serene and poetic. By autumn, it produces fascinating indigo-blue seeds encased in vibrant red follicles, adding an exotic touch to any collection. Known in Chinese as 白花芍药 (bai hua shao yao), or "white peony," this species is a diploid nothospecies originating from the hybridization of P. lactiflora and P. mairei.

With its thick, carrot-like roots and lush, dark green foliage, Paeonia sterniana is a compact marvel of nature. The linear-oblong leaflets, glaucous below, add to its allure. Distinguished from its relatives by its solitary blooms and hairless carpels, it offers a distinct profile that enchants enthusiasts and collectors alike. Discovered in 1938 and named in honor of plant enthusiast Frederick Claude Stern, Paeonia sterniana brings a touch of the wild and rare into cultivated spaces, promising a unique horticultural experience that captivates and rewards those who appreciate botanical rarities.
