Looking to add a fragrant and visually appealing plant to your garden? Look no further than Osmanthus americanus (Synonym Cartrema americana), also known as American olive, wild olive, or devilwood. This evergreen shrub or small tree is native to southeastern North America and Mexico, and grows up to 36 feet tall. Its glossy, leathery leaves form a narrow, oblong crown, while its creamy-white flowers emit a strong fragrance in early spring. The small blue-black fruit that follows is similar to cherries and resembles cultivated olives. Devilwood gets its name from its wood, which is fine-textured and difficult to work with. This plant is dioecious; that is, male pollinator plants are required to get a female fruit set. This plant is a fantastic ornamental addition to gardens and is sure to impress with its fragrant and attractive appearance.
