Sweet Basil, botanically known as Ocimum basilicum, is a highly sought-after culinary herb that has been used for thousands of years. The plant acts on the digestive and nervous systems, helping to ease digestive problems such as flatulence, colic and stomach cramps. Sweet basil is a tender plant and is used in cuisines worldwide, with leaves that have a strong, pungent and often sweet smell. There are many varieties of Ocimum basilicum, but the most commonly used is sweet basil or Genovese basil. While most varieties of basil are annuals, some are perennials in warm, tropical climates. The plant must be grown in well-drained soil and prefers hot, dry conditions. Basil is most commonly used fresh in recipes, and is a key ingredient in the popular Italian sauce, pesto. The plant can be grown both indoors and outdoors, and propagated reliably from cuttings. Sweet Basil is truly a must-have herb for any herb garden or culinary enthusiast.
