The Metrosideros excelsa, also known as the pōhutukawa or New Zealand Christmas tree, is a coastal evergreen tree in the Myrtaceae family known for its vibrant red flowers made up of a mass of stamens. Renowned for its strength and beauty, the pohutukawa is regarded as a chiefly tree by Māori. It grows up to 25 metres high and has a spreading, dome-like form. Vigorous and easy to grow, it has naturalised in several areas in New Zealand and other mild-to-warm climates around the world. Its wood is dense, strong, and highly figured, and was used for beaters and other small, heavy items and shipbuilding. The pohutukawa is under threat from browsing by the introduced common brushtail possum, and conservation efforts aim to reverse the decline of pohutukawa and other Metrosideros species. Many cultivars have been released, with varying flower colors and growth habits. Add a touch of strength and beauty to your holiday decor with a Metrosideros excelsa Christmas tree.
