Magnolia sieboldii, also known as Oyama Magnolia, is a beautiful and unique species native to eastern Asia in China, Japan, and Korea. Its 4" pure white bowl-shaped flowers with red stamens face more or less downward and open primarily in early summer, but continue intermittently until late summer. This shrubby species prefers sun or part shade and doesn't do well in limey soils. Magnolia sieboldii is a hardy tree and successful in cultivation in areas as far north as Arboretum Mustila in Finland. It is also grown as an ornamental tree in gardens and is one of the hardiest magnolias. Magnolia sieboldii has three subspecies and is named after the German doctor Philipp Franz von Siebold. In North Korea, it has even been designated as their national flower. Add an Oyama Magnolia to your garden to enjoy this stunning and unique species.
