Looking for a unique, fragrant addition to your landscape? Look no further than the Maackia hupehensis, also known as the Chinese Maackia. This small, rounded, shrubby deciduous tree is sure to impress with its erect, spike-like clusters of fragrant, dull white, pea-like flowers that bloom in late spring, followed by elliptic seed pods. The compound, dark green leaves with 11-13 leaflets each are attractive in summer, and emerging silvery gray-green in spring. While it doesn't produce any fall colors, the coppery-brown bark exfoliates on mature trees for added visual interest. The genus name honors 19th century Siberian explorer, Richard Karlovich Maack, and the tree is most closely related to the slightly larger yellowwood. Give your landscape an exotic touch with the Maackia hupehensis.
