Lupinus perennis, also known as Sundial Lupine, Wild Lupine, or Wild Perennial Lupine, is a beautiful and hardy perennial wildflower. Its palm shaped leaves and sparsely pubescent flowers range in color from blue to pink and purple. This legume species is easily grown in any moderately good soil in a sunny position, and can thrive in poor sandy soil. This plant has a symbiotic relationship with certain soil bacteria that fix atmospheric nitrogen, which can also benefit nearby plants. Additionally, it serves as food for several lepidoptera species, such as the Karner blue caterpillar, making it an important component of the ecosystem. Unfortunately, the plant has been declining in number and range since the Industrial Revolution, and is now endangered in some areas. However, prescribed burns and other forms of disturbance can improve the habitat quality for the established lupines, making it easier for them to reproduce. Bring this beautiful and important plant to your garden today.
