Juniperus rigida, commonly known as the Temple Juniper, is a beautiful and attractive evergreen tree, native to northern China, Korea, Japan, and the far southeast of Russia. It has a loose, open habit, with sharp, needle-like bright green foliage that looks attractive throughout the year. It grows well in most soil types but requires a well-drained, slightly alkaline or neutral soil. It is also drought tolerant once established. It is often planted in temple grounds in Japan and is also grown as a bonsai. The fruit of the tree is edible and can be ground into a spice. The tree also yields essential oil and is used for construction, agricultural implements, and fencing. It can grow up to 10m tall and is suitable for woodland gardens and sunny edges. The tree is also known for its diuretic properties and is excellent for medicinal use. Overall, the Temple Juniper is an excellent ornamental tree ideal for any garden.
