Hydrastis Canadensis, more commonly known as Goldenseal, is a perennial herb native to southeastern Canada and the northeastern United States. This herb is easily identified by its thick, knotted rootstock and palmate, hairy leaves. In the late spring, it produces small, inconspicuous flowers with greenish-white stamens, which give way to orange or red berries in late summer. Goldenseal is used in Western herbal medicine as an anti-inflammatory, anti-diarrheal, antibacterial and immune-enhancing remedy. Additionally, it is believed to be useful in treating muscle spasms, cancer, gastrointestinal disorders, and conjunctivitis, among other ailments. Despite its traditional medicinal use, research is inconclusive about the effectiveness of Goldenseal. However, some experiments have shown it to be useful in preventing and treating MRSA, while traditional use has demonstrated its value as a bitter tonic and astringent. Goldenseal is considered to be a threatened/ near extinct species in it's native range due to habitat loss and rhizome harvest for medicinal uses. Our seeds are ethically harvested.
