Growing Info

Scarification: Soak in water, let stand in water for 24 hours

Stratification: cold stratify for 30 days

Germination: sow seed 1/16" deep, tamp the soil, mulch the seed bed

Other: seed can be treated with Captan (4 tablespoons/gallon of water) during stratification to prevent fungal problems

Introducing the Hesperocyparis nevadensis Piute Cypress, a medium-sized evergreen tree that can grow up to 39 meters tall. With a conic crown and sparse, fragrant foliage varying in color from dull gray-green to glaucous blue-green, this cypress tree is truly a sight to behold. The leaves are scale-like, highly glandular, resinous and aromatic, and are produced on rounded shoots. The seed cones are globose to oblong and mature to a gray or gray-brown shade 20-24 months after pollination. The male cones release pollen in February-March, making this tree a stunning sight with golden powdered male flowers. This species can only be seen in the wild by travelling on an unsurfaced clay road for 2 and a half miles, but it's worth the journey to witness this magnificent tree in all its glory.
