Introducing Helleborus niger, also known as Christmas rose or black hellebore. An evergreen perennial with dark, leathery, pedate leaves and large, flat flowers that bloom from midwinter to early spring. Though typically white, the petals may occasionally be pink or purple. This poisonous plant has become a traditional favourite in cottage gardens due to its ability to bloom in the depths of winter. It can be difficult to grow well, preferring moist, alkaline soil in dappled shade. Consider adding leaf-mould or lime to your soil to improve growth. The plant is available in large-flowered cultivars as well as double-flowered and pink-flowered selections. Helleborus niger has been successfully hybridized with other hellebore species, creating tough, hardy plants with large flowers. In ancient times, the plant's roots were commonly used for medicinal purposes, and in folklore, the plant was believed to have both protective and malevolent powers. The Christmas rose is a fascinating plant with a rich history and beautiful blooms.
