Gaultheria procumbens, commonly known as Eastern Teaberry, Checkerberry, Boxberry, or American Wintergreen, is a small evergreen groundcover native to northeastern North America. It grows in acidic soil in pine or hardwood forests and produces light pink or pinkish-white flowers in summer, followed by scarlet fruit. The leaves and branches make fine herbal tea, while the fruits have a strong spicy taste akin to germolene. The plant’s importance to wildlife lies in the persistence of its fruit through winter, and it is regularly browsed by white-tailed deer, wild turkey, sharp-tailed grouse, and other animals. The Royal Horticultural Society’s awarded Gaultheria procumbens with the Award of Garden Merit, making it a must-have in your garden.
