Fremontodendron californicum, also known as California flannelbush or Fremontia, is a stunning evergreen shrub or small tree native to California, Baja, and western Arizona. The fuzzy, flannel-like leaves and showy yellow flowers make it a magnificent addition to any landscape. It is divided into four subspecies, with the Pine Hill flannelbush being a federally listed endangered species found only in metal-rich gabbro soil. The inner bark's sap was used as a traditional Native American medicinal remedy, while the wood and bark were used as building materials and cordage. Cultivated as an ornamental plant, it is ideal for planting in native plant, drought-tolerant, and wildlife gardens, and in natural landscaping and habitat restoration projects. Hybrids of Fremontodendron californicum and Fremontodendron mexicanum are also available in the horticultural trade, including the award-winning Fremontodendron 'California Glory'. With its stunning foliage and blossoms, Fremontodendron californicum is a must-have for any garden enthusiast.
