Looking for a medium-sized deciduous tree for your landscape? Consider Fraxinus angustifolia, also known as Narrowleaf Ash. This beautiful tree is native to central and southern Europe, northwest Africa, and southwest Asia. It can grow up to 90 ft tall and has a trunk of 4.5 ft in diameter. The bark is smooth and pale grey on young trees, becoming square-cracked and knobbly on old trees. Its leaves are pinnate and have 3-13 slender leaflets, which make it unique from other related species. In early spring, Fraxinus angustifolia produces inflorescences that can be male, hermaphrodite, or mixed. All individuals have both male and hermaphrodite flowers. Its fully-formed fruit is a samara 3-4cm long with a pale brown wing 1.5-2cm long. Additionally, it can tolerate atmospheric pollution and strong winds but not maritime exposure. This tree prefers dry or moist soil and can grow in alkaline soils. Plant Fraxinus angustifolia to add a touch of elegance to your outdoor space.
