The American Beech, or Fagus grandifolia, is a majestic shade-tolerant species commonly found in forests in the final stages of succession in eastern North America. With smooth gray bark and vibrant dark green leaves, it produces edible nuts that are small but very sweet and nutritious. The American Beech outperforms the more common European Beech, and while it has no cultivars, its wood is harvested for uses such as flooring, containers, furniture, handles, and woodenware. The beech tree's distinctive, cigar-shaped buds make it easy to identify, and it is an important food source for many species of animals, including humans. If you're looking for a sturdy, imposing native tree for your property that casts dense shade, the American Beech is an excellent choice, although it does require ample moisture and rich soil to thrive.
